CONVOY Study

Neuralink's trial of N1 control of a helper robotic arm. PRIME participants can take part.

The CONVOY Study is Neuralink's trial of assistive-device and robotic-arm control. It uses the same N1 implant as PRIME, and PRIME participants can take part. Where PRIME asks whether thought can move a cursor, CONVOY asks whether thought can move a helper arm in the physical world.

What is the CONVOY Study?

CONVOY is registered with the United States National Library of Medicine as NCT06710626. Neuralink's launch note is at neuralink.com/updates/convoy-study-launch/. The trial tests N1 control of a helper robotic arm and other assistive devices. It is one of the three trials named on Neuralink's landing page: PRIME, CONVOY, and VOICE.

Why the CONVOY Study Exists

A cursor on a screen is independence. A robotic arm that can reach, hold, and feed is a different kind. CONVOY exists to test that step: take the implant that already moves a pointer, and point it at a physical helper. People already in PRIME can join, so the trial builds on implants that are already in place rather than starting from zero.

How it Works

The N1 reads intended movement from the motor cortex. In CONVOY those signals are mapped onto a robotic arm and other assistive devices rather than onto a mouse cursor. Alex Conley, a PRIME participant with a spinal cord injury, was the first to control a robotic arm with the implant. He also flies a radio-controlled airplane, plays Counter-Strike 2, and designs 3D-printed parts by thought. Nick Wray, a graphic designer with ALS, controls a robotic arm telepathically.

The Economics of the CONVOY Study

Nothing is for sale. The implant, the robot that places it, and the companion software are still experimental. CONVOY is a clinical study of assistive-device control, not a commercial arm Neuralink is selling.

Current Status of the CONVOY Study

CONVOY began in 2024. Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix and University of Miami Health run PRIME and CONVOY. Those two hospitals have been implant sites since 2024. Neuralink's public updates name Alex Conley as the first person to control a robotic arm with the implant, and Nick Wray as a participant who controls a robotic arm telepathically.

What Comes Next

CONVOY is the physical-world branch of the same implant program. PRIME keeps expanding sites and enrollments. VOICE takes the implant toward speech. CONVOY takes it toward arms and tools. Each spinoff is a fresh test of what a single implant can read.

The Bottom Line

CONVOY is how Neuralink tests whether thought can move more than a cursor. The trial is running at named hospitals, PRIME participants can join, and two participants are already on the public record controlling a robotic arm. That is the state of the study, not a finished product.
