America PAC

The super PAC Elon Musk built to back Republicans.

America PAC is the independent-spending super PAC that Elon Musk founded in May 2024 to back Republican candidates, and in a single cycle it became one of the largest political-money operations in modern United States politics, funded overwhelmingly by one man. A super PAC is a political committee that can raise and spend unlimited money to support or oppose candidates, as long as it does not coordinate directly with their campaigns. America PAC registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the federal agency that tracks campaign money, on May 22, 2024, and in its first cycle it took in $263.5 million and spent $261.3 million. It also ran one of the most talked-about tactics of the race, a daily $1 million giveaway to voters who signed its petition.

What is America PAC?

America PAC is an "independent-expenditure-only" committee, which is the formal name for a super PAC. That means it pays for its own advertising, canvassing, and voter outreach on its own, rather than handing money to candidates, who by law can only accept small, capped donations. The committee is based in Austin, Texas, and lists Chris Young as treasurer, and it was funded overwhelmingly by Elon Musk. Its stated values center on secure borders, safe cities, sensible government spending, a fair justice system, free speech, and the right to self-defense.

Why America PAC Exists

Elon Musk created America PAC to put serious money and boots-on-the-ground organizing behind Republican candidates, above all Donald Trump, in the 2024 presidential race. The super PAC structure exists for exactly this, because an individual cannot give a campaign more than a few thousand dollars, but a super PAC can spend without limit on its own. That legal gap is what let a single major funder turn a large fortune into a national field operation. Elon Musk later said he had committed at least $250 million to back the 2024 ticket, and much of it ran through America PAC.

How it Works

America PAC raises money, then spends it in two main ways. The first is independent expenditures, which means advertising and messaging that openly support or oppose a candidate, and in the 2024 cycle these reached $173.7 million. The second is operating expenditures, the cost of running the machine itself, which totaled $87.5 million.

How America PAC spent in the 2024 cycle

Much of that operating budget paid for field work. America PAC took on the main job of door-knocking in swing states, and it deployed up to 400 paid staff per key state while committing to reach millions of voters in places like Pennsylvania and Michigan. It also ran the incentives that grabbed the most attention, including $100 payments to petition signers and a daily $1 million giveaway to registered voters in battleground states who signed its petition, with roughly $27 million going to petition programs.

The Money Behind America PAC

Almost all of America PAC's money came from Elon Musk, whose contributions included roughly $75 million in the third quarter of 2024 alone. That concentration is what made the committee so unusual, because most super PACs pool money from many donors, while America PAC worked largely as one person's spending vehicle. In the 2023-2024 cycle it reported $263.5 million in total receipts against $261.3 million in disbursements, which left about $2.2 million in cash on hand at year's end.

America PAC disbursements by election cycle

The scale of that single cycle put America PAC among the highest-spending super PACs of 2024.

America PAC Today

After the 2024 election, America PAC's pace changed sharply. It stayed active into 2025 and backed the conservative candidate in the April 1, 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court race, a contest whose total spending across all groups topped $100 million. But Elon Musk signaled a pullback, saying in May 2025 that he planned to cut his political spending substantially, and the FEC filings show that shift. For the 2025-2026 cycle through March 31, 2026, the committee reported $49.9 million in receipts and $51.8 million in disbursements, with independent expenditures of just $87,133, which is a tiny fraction of the prior cycle.

Independent expenditures by cycle

The near-disappearance of independent expenditures shows a committee that spent heavily on operations and other costs while stepping back almost entirely from the candidate advertising that defined 2024.

What Comes Next

America PAC remains a registered, active committee, so it can scale back up if Elon Musk chooses to jump back in ahead of future elections. Its 2025 spending leaned toward state-level races and ongoing operations rather than the mass advertising of a presidential year. Whether it returns to 2024-level spending comes down to a decision that rests almost entirely with one funder, which is the defining feature, and the central question, of this particular committee.

The Bottom Line

America PAC is the vehicle Elon Musk used to turn a large fortune into one of the biggest independent political spending efforts of 2024, reporting $261.3 million in disbursements and $173.7 million in candidate-focused expenditures in a single cycle. Its later slowdown shows how completely its size follows the choices of one person, and only Elon could build a national field operation this fast and this big out of a standing start.
